Different names of Marijuana

Marijuana is most commonly known as a crude drug that gives its users a mind-altering high when smoked. It is usually made from the buds, leaves, stems and seeds of a plant called Cannabis sativa. The high brought about by this drug comes from the 4000 chemicals and compounds present in the mother plant. One such compound that greatly contributes to the high producing characteristic of marijuana is the Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.

Generally, the THC level of the plant determines the strength or potency of the marijuana. The more THC is in the plant, the stronger and better the high is. Certain cannabis strains are preferred because they contain high levels of THC. Such strain is the sativas. However, there are users who favor a more calming and relaxing high. In this case, the strain has to have lower amounts of THC.

Through the years, the marijuana drug has generated different names. The aliases were usually created to go about transactions without getting busted by the authorities. Some were made to make marijuana sound cool like A-bomb, Black Ganga and Zoom.

Below are just some of the famous names that marijuana goes by.

Ganja

The term ganja is what Hindus refer to as hemp which we all know is another name for marijuana. It is also used to describe a user’s bounty. However, this term is not very popular in the marijuana circle. The only people familiar with this term are the hippies.

Pot

This name came from the word “potiguaya” which is Spanish for marijuana leaves. The Americans adapted this name because it was the Spanish immigrants who brought and introduced the marijuana plant to them.

The name has been used many times before that soon the authorities became familiar with it. Thus, users were forced to stop using it and create a new one unless they want to be caught and put in jail.
Nowadays, the term “pot” is used in the marijuana community to describe the intent of getting foolishly or stupidly drugged. This means that they smoke marijuana so that they can act foolishly.

Bud or Weed

Smokers normally use these terms to describe their stash or supply of marijuana. These were the replacement codes for the pot and probably the most popular pseudonym of the marijuana drug today. Bud and weed have no negative association whatsoever so smokers, breeder and dealers are free to use this without any worries of getting apprehended by the authorities.

Cannabis

This can be considered as the most proper term to describe marijuana. It was used by the American government when they launched a movement to ban the cultivation of the plant. Ironically, this term is now used by professionals as a technical name for the drug. Researchers who want to further study and explore the wonders of this drug used this term in all their findings and papers. Cannabis is probably the most accepted name of marijuana for it fully describes the drug minus all the undesirable traits.
