According to Timothy Allen the Communist UFO-shaped Buzludzha building (pronounced Buz’ol’ja) in the Balkan Mountains is Bulgaria’s largest ideological monument to Communism which was left to ruin after the revolution in 1989. Nowadays, Buzludzha is still there, icebound, almost forgotten and abandoned, with stories that sound like parts of science fiction classics…
Buried in the monument’s concrete structure, is a time capsule containing a message for future generations explaining the significance of the building. The decor was a sumptuous mixture of marble and glass including a magnificent main hall containing 500sq metres of mosaic fresco depicting Bulgarian and Soviet communist themes. Today, this incredible derelict building stands as an iconic monument to an abandoned ideology. (Timothy Allen)
After viewing Timothy’s photos, I came to the conclusion, that this decaying build, with its extravagant architecture, is definitely one of the top abandoned places around the world and probably a main-target for all urban explorers in that area!
